Resolving Post-Separation Conflict: A Training Tool for High Conflict Parents
After the Storm (AtS) was created in response to…
A request from the West Virginia Supreme Court to develop a course for high conflict divorcing/divorced couples. The goal was to educate separated parents on the causes of anger and conflict, help them recognize when they engage in harmful conflict, and give them some strategies for controlling their conflict and communicating more effectively with the other parent.
The result of this effort is a powerful curriculum, delivered in a traditional class setting (providers to be determined locally) which uses realistic scenarios for educating on the causes and effects of high conflict between parents.
After the Storm differs from Children in the Middle, in that the conflict shown in this course is more intense and drawn-out. The Center recommends the After the Storm (AtS) course be used in combination with Children in Between Online. Using the on-line course, either before or after AtS, helps to reinforce the skill learning by repeating the skills training in a highly interactive online format and providing scenarios that show different contexts (from those seen in the AtS class).
Benefits for parents include:

Learning anger management strategies; and
-
