CHILDREN IN THE MIDDLE (CIM)
Beneficial for Parents
CDE has developed a comprehensive education program for divorcing
families: Children in the Middle(CIM) . CIM is endorsed
nationally by judges, lawyers, mediators, psychologists, and teachers.
The Children in the Middle interactive, online program is a highly interactive and enhanced version of the award winning Children in the Middle program that is the most widely used in North America. Parents recognize their family situations in the five scenarios in the program, they choose different ways of dealing with interparental conflict, and receive feedback on their choices. Parents enjoy moving at their own pace and schedule, privately. After completing the program (which takes one and a half to two and a half hours), research shows that parents reduce their conflict, return to court less often, and lower the stress on their children.
The skills parents learn to reduce conflict are presented in a form that makes learning rapid and available for immediate use. Parents will learn to think about the situations where conflict usually occurs in a way that gives them more options on how to handle themselves, thereby reducing the other parent’s likelihood of aggression or noncooperation. They will also learn effective methods for reducing their emotional reactions, giving them more control in tense situations, and setting better examples for their children. Parents will also increase their effectiveness with and sensitivity to their children’s needs, significantly lowering their children’s risk for behavior problems, depression, delinquency, school failure, and substance abuse.
The Children in the Middle program, which is a SAMHSA Model Program (the only divorce education program so designated) is backed by a guarantee. If an evaluation of the program’s impact does not show significant decreases in parental conflict or children’s stress (as measured by psychometrically sound instruments), the Center for Divorce Education will refund the purchase price.
